چکیده
Temperature programmed desorption and infrared and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopies were used during adsorption and reactions of thiophene in order to probe adsorbed intermediates and catalytic structures responsible for thiophene reactions with propane or H2 on H-ZSM5 and Co/H-ZSM5. Infrared spectra showed that thiophene interacts with acidic OH groups in H-ZSM5 via hydrogen bonding at ambient temperature. No additional bands were detected on Co/H-ZSM5, suggesting the absence of specific interactions with Co cations. During adsorption at ambient temperatures, infrared bands assigned to CH2 groups near C=C bonds or Satoms and to S–H species were detected and H-ZSM5 and Co/H-ZSM5 acquired colors typical of thiophene oligomers. Slightly above ambient temperatures, benzene and H2S formed from pre-adsorbed thiophene. These results indicate that hydrogen-bonded thiophene undergoes ring opening or oligomerization near ambient temperature on acidic OH groups in H-ZSM5. Some of the adsorbed thiophene (20–50%) interacts weakly with channel walls or with residual Na cations and desorbs unreacted. The remaining adsorbed thiophene desorbs as H2S, aromatic hydrocarbons, and organosulfur compounds, such as methylthiophene and benzothiophene, or forms irreversibly adsorbed unsaturated organic deposits. In situ infrared studies during thiophene and thiophene–propane reactions at 773 K on H-ZSM5 and Co/H-ZSM5 showed that surface coverages of thiophene-derived intermediates were low on acidic OH groups and Co cations. Co K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectra measured during these reactions confirmed that Co cations do not reduce or sulfide; their local environment, however, changes slightly, apparently because of interactions of strongly adsorbed species with Co cations. Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectra detected small amounts of organosulfur species, but no inorganic sulfides, after thiophene, thiophene–H2 , and thiophene–propane reactions, consistent with the observed stability of exchanged cations against reduction and sulfidation. S : Al ratios were less than 0.04 at. on all samples; these amounts represent less than 1% of the S-atoms removed from thiophene as H2S during catalytic propane–thiophene reactions.

Isotopic Tracer Studies of Thiophene Desulfurization ReactionsUsing Hydrogen from Alkanes on H-ZSM5 and Co/H-ZSM5
Reaction pathways for the desulfurization of thiophene using alkanes as hydrogen sources were probed by measuring the chemical and isotopic composition of products formed from 13C-labeled C3H8 and unlabeled C4H4S mixtures on H-ZSM5 and Co/H-ZSM5. Aliphatic hydrocarbons formed only from propane carbon atoms while aromatic molecules contained carbon atoms from both propane and thiophene. Hydrogen...

H-ZSM5, Zn/H-ZSM5, and Co/H-ZSM5 catalyze thiophene desulfurization with high H2S selectivity using propane as the exclusive hydrogen source. Desulfurization rates and selectivities were much higher than at the H2 concentrations present during propane reactions. Zn+2 and Co+2 cations at exchange sites increased desulfurization rates. On H-ZSM5, desulfurization rates and selectivities with propa...
متن کاملEffects of zeolite structure and aluminum content on thiophene adsorption, desorption, and surface reactions
The adsorption and desorption of thiophene and the reactions of thiophene-derived adsorbed species in He, H2, and O2 were examined on H-ZSM5, H-Beta, and H-Y with varying Si/Al ratios. Thiophene adsorption uptakes (per Al) were independent of Al content, but were above unity and influenced by zeolite structure (1.7, 2.2, and 2.9 on H-ZSM5, H-Beta, and H-Y). These data indicate that thiophene ol...

The dynamics and stoichiometry of thiophene adsorption and of rearrangements of thiophene-derived adsorbed species in O(2), He, H(2), and C(3)H(8) carriers were measured using chromatographic methods and mass spectrometry on H-ZSM5 and H-Y zeolites. Thiophene adsorption obeyed Langmuir isotherms on both zeolites. Adsorption uptakes were 1.7 and 2.8 thiophene/Al at 363 K on H-ZSM5 and H-Y zeolit...

Synthesis protocols, structures, and reactivity of Re-oxo species grafted onto H-ZSM5, and their subsequent conversion to Re-clusters through contact with H2 or CH4 were studied by using Raman, infrared, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Reactivity measurements by using alkane and alkanol reactants were also examined. Sublimation of Re(2)O(7) at 723 K led to a stoichiometric exchange with ea...
